TechWorks! Development
Proposed South Entrance Energy Exhibit at TechWorks! - Monitors visible from plaza encourage visitors to compare energy produced by a range of technologies
TechWorks! is an initiative of the Center for Technology & Innovation, founded in 1996, located at 321 Water Street, Binghamton, NY on a two acre downtown site donated by Edward and Karen Levene in 2009.
Development of TechWorks! as a showcase of regional technology - past, present, and future is an ongoing Center initiative. Dynamic displays of technology in action and emerging innovation are planned to inspire a continued flow in the technology talent pipeline that runs generations deep in this part of NY. TechWorks! development cost is estimated at $13 - $15 million. Government approvals, including zoning and State Historic Preservation Office review, are in hand. TechWorks! opening is projected for 24-30 months after capital funds are secured. When complete, TechWorks! is expected to attract ~70,000 visitors annually, employing 9 FT, 6 PT staff, and contributing an estimated $6 million and 100+ hospitality sector jobs per year to the Greater Binghamton economy (ConsultEcon, 2006; Center, 2016).
TechWorks! design integrates green building, historic preservation, and outdoor art, bringing life to the creative legacy & resilient spirit of the region for today & tomorrow
The 30,000 sf vintage brick ice cream factory will be renovated, adding a second floor Riverview Terrace and pervious paving throughout the site. The new, barrier-free South entrance will showcase NYS energy production technologies – cornice of photovoltaic panels, solar thermal panels clad roof, smart glass walls, and a geothermal system. Plans include a rooftop sculpture visible from three interstate highways, a Garden of Ideas with seating and sculptural decision trees, and murals illustrating industrial and environmental themes of the Upper Susquehanna watershed and TechWorks! ideashed.
